Driving down Cope Avenue, you might not notice Taste of India. Once in its direct vicinity, however, it's nearly impossible to ignore the exhilarating fragrances that emanate from the restaurant, where cardamom, curry, cinnamon and cloves are blended to perfection in more than 80 authentic Indian dishes. The white-tableclothed dining room is spacious and light, surrounded by banks of windows and dominated visually by large buffet tables along one wall. Crowds flock to the weekday lunch buffet, while a full menu is also available. The first question: How hot? At Taste of India, you can have the chef add chiles until flames practically shoot from the plate. Mild is, of course, also an option. Start with a light Indian beer – Taj Mahal is a good one – and a plate of naan served with addictive spicy and sweet dipping sauces. The entrée list includes more than 50 options. Roasted tandoori meats are served on sizzling platters garnished with onion rings and lemon wedges; kormas are covered in a creamy sauce with cashews and raisins; masalas are marinated in yogurt and spices and served in a tomato cream sauce. Whatever your meal, don't skip after-dinner drinks, either an Indian tea with cinnamon and milk or a lassi, a sort of sweet-salty fruit smoothie. Beer and wine available.
