True fish-and-chips aficionados know that the meal must be eaten in the proper surroundings. There must be raucousness and some amount of real or implied debauchery. If there's a brown ale on tap nearby, then so much the better. Brit's Pub has the formula down. Not only is there raucousness, but also lawn bowling, quiz nights, croquet tournaments and darts. It's hard to decide whether to eat or play. Luckily, you can do both. Today, after multiple expansions, the pub encompasses all three floors and the rooftop of its Nicollet Mall building, plus a 10,000-square-foot lawn bowling green and garden park. In warm weather, it's hard to find an empty chair. And how's the food? Very British, for the most part: bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, Cornish pasties and peas to accompany the fish and chips, of course. There are a few salads, including the mango chicken salad, which the menu claims "not even the Queen could resist." There's no mention of the Queen's stance on Guinness stout, but it's served in vast quantities anyway. If you don't have the Queen's budget, visit Brit's on weekday afternoons between 4:30 and 6:30, when appetizers and selected beer and wine are discounted. A full British High Tea is served from 2–3:30 pm Mon–Sat, by reservation only, featuring tea sandwiches, imported English cheeses, fruit, scones and other sweets. Full bar. Serving lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Voted Best Patio in the 2008 Star Tribune readers poll.
