Polka music, Old World décor and classic Polish food – you're in the Midwest now – characterize Milwaukee's Polonez Restaurant. That's right, Matka has tied on her apron and is stirring the soup, rolling out dough, and slicing cabbage and onion, all for you. Nourish yourself with the bigos (hunter's stew) or a plate of pierogies, pan-fried Polish dumplings filled with your choice of meat, cheese, sauerkraut or potato. Ordering the Polish Plate will ensure that you get a little bit of everything: a Polish sausage, a stuffed cabbage roll, four pierogies and a potato pancake. The restaurant's Friday fish fry is a highlight. The full bar features Polish vodkas, beers and slivovitz, a plum-based alcohol that's clear and scarily potent. Serving lunch Tue–Fri, dinner Tue–Sun. Sun brunch 11 am–2 pm. Voted Best Polish Restaurant in the 2008 Shepherd-Express readers poll.
