When Milwaukeeans think pizza, they think Balistreri's. The thin-crust pizzas and the traditional menu have been nurturing residents for two generations and counting. And when they think Balistreri's, most Milwaukeeans think of the Wauwatosa location on 68th Street, with its red-checked tablecloths and a line out the door on busy nights. (A more upscale spin-off, Balistreri's Bluemound Inn, is nearby.) Pizza construction at Balistreri's approaches a science. Purists insist that for a crisp crust, limit toppings to just a couple. If you exceed four, request the olive oil instead of pizza sauce, or your thin, crisp crust will slip into sogginess. Beyond the pizza, there's spaghetti, lasagna, house-made meatballs and linguine with clam sauce. There's also a big selection of sandwiches such as the corned beef on rye and the chicken Parmesan, plus a few indescribables, such as the octopus salad. But it's pizza they really come for. The interior of the Bluemound Road location is lovingly decorated and pleasantly fussy, so it doesn't have that Old World-Italian-restaurant feel of the original. Still, the pizza is great and the wait is usually shorter. This location also features steak, fresh seafood and more elaborate Italian dishes as well as a late-night menu of a couple pastas and several sandwiches. If you're headed out for a night of fun after your meal, look into the restaurant's limo service, which will (for a fee) take you to a limited number of destinations. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner and late-night daily.
