The packed parking lot doesn't lie – Midtown institution The Cupboard, housed in a former Shoney's, is a favorite among all ages for its country charm and comforting, just-like-Mamaused-to-make vegetable plates. (Vegetarians can rest assured that none of the vegetable dishes are cooked with meat.) Outstanding selections include the tart-but-sweet fried green tomatoes (available seasonally) and the nourishing eggplant casserole. Others swear by the meat-and-three plates, which change daily. Look for golden fried chicken and catfish, corn pudding, turnip greens and peas, and doctor your plate with the Louisiana hot sauce and bottled vinegar pepper that rest on your tabletop. Bottomless baskets of cornbread and yeast rolls accompany every meal, and sweet tea refills are free, but save room for a slice of the tangy lemon ice box pie or the gravity-defying coconut meringue pie. Watermelons, Ripley tomatoes, sweet peaches and other produce are available to go. So on your way out, pick up a Cupboard cookbook, and try to duplicate the menu items at home. No alcohol available.
