Here in Memphis, the only topic more inflammatory than politics, religion or the current whereabouts of Elvis is barbecue. Longstanding purveyors such as Payne's, Cozy Corner, The Bar-B-Q Shop and the Germantown Commissary are all worthy contenders on the local scene, but in Midtown (and with a location on Summer Avenue), relative newcomer Central BBQ is winning over barbecue enthusiasts. Customers rave about the generous helpings of tender, slow-cooked meat piled high on buns and topped with, yep, coleslaw, all for only a few dollars a plate. Follow your nose to the tiny building with the red-and-white checked tin roof that's nestled, incongruously, on one of Memphis' antique rows. No need to dress up – customers are more concerned with turning around their baseball caps as to avoid interference with the ability to shovel in mouthful after delicious mouthful. Beer available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Voted Best Barbecue in 2007 Memphis Flyer readers poll.
