Old-school diners are an endangered species, but thankfully Barksdale Restaurant continues to flourish. Along with the Mid-City Barber Shop located a few doors south, this retro diner is one of the last bastions of mid-century Memphis in the recently gentrified Cooper-Young neighborhood. Midtowner Bob Henry runs this wood-paneled establishment, which specializes in stereotypical country breakfasts (think fluffy omelets, sausage biscuits the size of your fist and big slabs of salty ham covered in red-eye gravy) and Southern meat-and-three plate lunches. Specials rotate all week long (regulars swear by pork chop Mondays and the country-fried steak, available on Wednesdays and Thursdays), while mainstays such as cheeseburgers, BLTs, club sandwiches, onion rings and fries round out the traditional diner menu. What's really out of the ordinary here is the clientele. Rock star Jack White, who has recorded at Ardent Studios a few blocks away, is a visitor, as are some of the Memphis Grizzlies, a handful of local politicians and a bevy of average joes hankering for a real Southern meal. Everyone here is on common ground with the unhurried, wisecracking waitresses (though surprisingly there's not an "Alice" or "Flo" in the bunch), who dole out plenty of "honeys" and "darlins" along with the sweet tea and coffee refills. No alcohol available. Serving breakfast and lunch daily.

Do you prefer your pork shoulder chopped or pulled, your ribs served wet or dry? In this musical mecca of W.C. Handy, Booker T. and Elvis Presley, different culinary tunes still sound sweet.
