If you dine at funky Automatic Slim's Tonga Club – opened (and sold in 2008) by Karen Blockman Carrier (the maven behind other popular local joints such as the Beauty Shop, Cielo and Do Sushi & Lounge) – keep your eyes peeled, because you never know who might be sitting in the zebra-skin banquette next to you. Among many others, music greats such as cult hero singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo drop in for dinner whenever they're in town. Like its clientele, Slim's menu is decidedly diverse. Think Caribbean, Asian, Southwestern and Cajun, with an emphasis on eccentric flavors and exotic spices. Dishes such as roasted sea bass in a red curry and coconut sauce, grilled rack of lamb encrusted with pumpkin seeds and glazed with a blackberry-pepper marinade, and roasted chicken (crusted with guava and coconut, served alongside a trinity of minimalist guacamole, sliced mangos and pickled red onions) help the restaurant retain its envelopepushing reputation. Simpler salad and sandwich fare is also offered. Park yourself at the bar and order something unusual – the bartenders are particularly adept at caipirinhas, gin martinis and what many consider to be the best mojitos in town – and gaze at the beautiful, artsy types who crowd the restaurant. Dressed up or down, you'll join the fray in no time. Reservations suggested. Live music Fri–Sat. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly.
