Sapporo Japanese Grill and Sushi, a hip, locally owned Japanese steak house, distinguishes itself from national Japanese steak house chains in a number of ways, most notably its exquisite sushi bar. You'll be drawn in immediately by the high-tech, industrial appearance, which makes great use of steel, glass, black marble and neon. There's an area with large tabletop teppanyaki grills for those who enjoy slice-and-dice theatrics with their Japanese-American cuisine. The teppanyaki menu, which includes chicken, steak and seafood, is excellent. But Sapporo really gets high marks with its sushi bar, the largest in town in terms of seats (two dozen) as well as selection (about 75 sushi and sashimi choices, all fresh and attractively presented). One of the many standouts is the lobster roll, a wonderful combination of lobster, crab, avocado and asparagus wrapped in rice and seaweed with a creamy mayo sauce enlivened by wasabi and citrus. Elsewhere on the menu, the miso soup, baked mussels, udon (noodles in broth), bento boxes and tempura dishes are also very good. Full bar. Serving dinner nightly. Late-night Thu–Sat. Voted Best Japanese/Sushi Restaurant in the 2008 LEO and Louisville magazine readers polls. Full bar.
