It's sugar, sugar everywhere at Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen, with eight Louisville locations offering old-fashioned flavors, old-fashioned value and even a collection of old-timey knickknacks and a free jukebox. Pies, cakes and cookies are baked from scratch daily, and the ice cream is fresh-churned with real cream, just like Grandma used to make. The signature item here is the Caramel Iced Dutch Apple Pie, but that's just one among many mouthwatering goodies. The menu is always changing to reflect seasonal offerings – autumn, for example, brings pumpkin bundt cake, pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin ice cream – and the owners' whims. There are flaky fruit pies such as peach, cherry and apple; meringue pies, such as chocolate, butterscotch and lemon; and chess pie. As for the cakes, favorites include double chocolate and yellow cake with caramel frosting. You can also get holiday cookies and much more. No alcohol available. Serving during lunch and dinner hours daily. Hours vary by season and location. Voted Best Dessert in the 2008 LEO readers poll.
