Baker Bob Hancock has been called a "human bread machine" because of the passion and single-mindedness with which he pursues his craft. Well, that and the fact that the result of his passionate pursuit, conducted with the aid of a $55,000 wood-burning oven imported from Spain, is some of the best bread you'll find anywhere. Hancock's Blue Dog Bakery & Café produces croissants and pastries as well as artisan levain (naturally leavened) breads that are sold in fine groceries and other retail outlets throughout Louisville. And the attached café serves food that is worthy of the breads. Sandwiches, which come with a side of wheat berry salad, include a marvelous goat cheese, pear and walnut pesto panini as well as a cold tuna and tapenade sandwich. Egg dishes are a specialty at breakfast and during Saturday brunch (8 am–2:30 pm). The fine desserts include what many consider Louisville's best chocolate chip cookie. Blue Dog also offers a well-chosen wine list, craft beers and fine European-style (read: strong) coffee. Serving during breakfast and lunch Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon.
