According to Celtic legend, Avalon is the isle of the dead, the afterlife home for heroes like King Arthur. In Louisville, however, Avalon is more widely known as a trendy Bardstown Road eatery serving "fresh American cuisine." After owner Steve Clements opened his establishment in 2002, it quickly made a name for itself with the warm, art-filled, romantic ambiance of its multiple interior dining levels, its lush and inviting patio, and its creative, seasonally changing cuisine. The menu has remained essentially the same: American with notable Southern accents as well as Asian and Middle Eastern influences. A dozen or so starters include a soup of the day and salads as well as the intriguing truffle and lobster macaroni and cheese. Entrées such as beer- and chili-braised boneless short ribs, pan-seared scallops with fried cheddar grits, and grilled beef tenderloin highlight the menu. There are also sandwiches and pastas. Desserts include vanilla crème brûlée and the marvelous fried apple cheesecake. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon.
