Owner Andrew Smith's elegant fine-dining destination, hidden in the rear of a St. Matthews shopping center, conjures up images of the French countryside. White picket fencing and a garden highlight the exterior. Inside, hardwood floors, fine antiques, soft lighting and tranquil music create a relaxing mood that prepares you for the gloriously simple French- and Italian-inspired cookery. Local ingredients are featured prominently on the menu, which changes daily and strives to please all. Potential starters are almonds with marinated olives or veal sweetbreads with wild mushrooms and creamy veal jus. The salads are masterful, with such ingredients as Indiana goat cheese, golden beet carpaccio and roasted shallot dressing. Among the main courses, you might enjoy potato gnocchi with vegetables, prime rib eye with Roquefort cheese, or rabbit braised with Dijon and cream. The wine list is stellar, and desserts are amazing, with choices including chocolate mousse flavored with Woodford Reserve bourbon. Alfresco dining on the patio is a desirable warm-weather option. 211 also offers an excellent Sunday brunch (10:30 am–2:30 pm). Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Mon. Voted Best Appetizer Menu in the 2008 Louisville magazine critics poll.
