Many Kansas Citians were saddened when owners Gary and Cristina Worden announced they were relocating Piropos restaurant from its stunning hilltop in Parkville, Mo., to the still-being-developed Briarcliff Village in the Northland, but one visit to the Argentine restaurant's new second-story space will put the samba back in your step. After climbing the wide, winding staircase – its smoky, wine-colored walls lined with vibrant, abstract canvases – you stand before the wide-open dining room, a mural of sultry Argentine dancers along the wall and a magnificent view of the downtown skyline visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. This is the place for a romantic dinner with attitude. A tango, not a slow dance. Kansas Citians feel right at home with the sophisticated Argentine cuisine abounding in grilled meats (especially beef), seafood and fresh salads and vegetables that are heavily influenced by the nation's European ancestors. Begin your meal with an empanada – a flaky pastry filled with combinations of beef, chicken, mozzarella, ham and provolone – fried calamari with a cilantro pesto dip, or Brie baked in a pastry and accompanied by apricot-chile preserves. Beef entrées include a Kansas City strip, peppercorn-encrusted filet, rib eye or beef tenderloin. Pan-seared salmon, ahi tuna, halibut, a shellfish skewer and breaded tilapia in a lemon-caper butter are a few of the fish selections. Several pasta dishes and salads pay tribute to Italy. Most desserts, including the crêpes, flan and chocolate cake, are served with dulce de leche, a rich, milky, caramel sauce. Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly. Original restaurant in Parkville still open for banquets and private parties.
