J.C. Hall's legacy lives on in the myriad of sentiments expressed within the greeting cards created by his first company, Hallmark. His passion for dining, though, led him to found another lasting Kansas City institution. Now in its third decade, The American Restaurant is still the city's most celebrated eatery, boasting a collection of awards for its food, wine, chef and even its architecture. Celina Tio (Chef Magazine's 2005 Chef of the Year and winner of the 2007 Best Chef: Midwest award from the James Beard Foundation) changes her menu regularly, and guests will delight in dishes such as the apple-brined pork tenderloin or her signature lobster shepherd's pie, when available.
