Opened in Tampa's historic Ybor City in 1905 by Casimiro Hernandez Sr. and now with locations throughout Florida, still family-owned and -operated Columbia Restaurant ranks as one of the most acclaimed Spanish, Cuban and Central American-inspired restaurants in the United States. In renowned St. Augustine, The Columbia is within walking distance of several landmarks, including Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the Spanish Quarter and Flagler College. From the extensive menu, start with the locally loved 1905 Salad, and perhaps a pitcher of sangria. Choose from an array of tapas dishes to share: lightly fried calamari or a baked casserole of shrimp, crab and artichoke hearts topped with Romano cheese. For lunch, The Original Cuban Sandwich is a must-try, with smoked ham, pork, salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickle and mustard. Besides sandwiches, there's also a good selection of chicken and fish dishes for lunch, which shine on the dinner menu, as well. Recommended dinner entrées include Red Snapper "Alicante" and Arroz con Pollo "Valenciana," which is bone-in chicken sautéed with olive oil, green peppers, onions, tomatoes and garlic. For dessert, try the guava cheesecake, the white chocolate bread pudding, or the Godiva chocolate cake topped with chocolate mousse and drizzled with caramel sauce and seasonal berries. Columbia Restaurant has received a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its list containing more than 700 labels. It also won the DiRoNA Award of Excellence in 2005. Reservations suggested.
