Chef/proprietress Elouise "Ouisie" Adams Jones has been part of the Houston dining scene off and on for quite a while, Ouisie's Table being her latest and most fashionable incarnation. Sitting nicely on San Felipe on the southwestern edge of affluent River Oaks, this is an unpretentious, fine-dining restaurant with deep roots in both Southern cooking and Gulf Coast cuisine, with more than a touch of modern sensibility. Seafood is probably the best way to start, with dishes such as rare tuna with grilled focaccia and manchego cheese, steamed clams and mussels served with a spicy fish stock, or a tower of crab made with layers of fresh avocado, tomatoes and lump crabmeat. Beef, lamb and seafood entrées are far from run-of-the-mill. And the house specialties can be even more enticing: shrimp and cheese grits, jumbo crab cakes, fried oyster dinner, upscale chicken-fried steak, and an unusual version of chicken-fried steak featuring Axis back-strap venison. The Little Bites Menu, offered between lunch and dinner daily, includes a tenderloin burger, soups and salads, and crispy fried oysters or crab cakes. A weekend brunch features many of the lunch and dinner specialties as well as omelets and egg dishes. The focused wine list is partial to California reds to complement the red meats, but there are food-friendly whites from France and more than a few champagnes from which to choose. Reservations suggested. Live music on the patio Fri–Sat nights. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Brunch served 11 am–2:30 pm Sat, 10 am–2:30 pm Sun.
