Since the 1980s, Kanomwan has been serving dishes with complexity and subtlety in flavor that is not found at most other Houston-area Thai restaurants. Few concessions are made to the American palate in such dishes as the extremely spicy yet amazingly flavorful pad ka pao, stir-fried ground meat with garlic, onions, basil and peppers. Other standouts include the near-requisite tom ka gai (soup with coconut milk, chicken and lemongrass), gang kyo wan gai (sliced chicken breast with green curry and coconut milk), gang ped (red curry with bamboo shoots, coconut milk, and either chicken or beef) and pad panaeng (a choice of meat stir-fried with curry and featuring coconut milk). Seafood can be excellent, especially the snapper dishes. And the goong lard prig, jumbo shrimp deep-fried and topped with chili paste, may be as good as any shrimp dish in the city. As exceptional as the food can be, the prices are very reasonable. To note, the owner has a reputation for being the local version of Seinfeld's infamous "Soup Nazi" character. This really only adds to the charm. Voted Best Thai Restaurant in 2007 Houston Press critics poll. Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Sun.
