Located in a Tudor-style cottage just off the beaten track, Hobbit Cafe is in a very appropriate setting considering its laid-back, vegetarian-friendly approach. This local spot, opened in the 1970s, has a connection to the Tolkien series in that a number of dishes – mainly the popular vegetarian sandwiches – are named after characters in the books. The menu offers more than a dozen vegetarian dishes, from Tex-Mex items to soy and black bean burgers. But the carnivore should visit without trepidation as well. There is quite a selection of tasty burgers, fajitas, enchiladas and meat-laden sandwiches. Other dishes of note include the wild salmon burger, portobello fajitas, spinach mushroom enchiladas, and the Gandalf sandwich filled with avocado and mushrooms with melted cheese. Though the standard side is shredded carrots, other options include black beans, wild rice, fresh fruit, fries, chips and onion chips. And most everyone seems to like the smoothies, of which there are several flavors. Voted Best Vegetarian Restaurant in 2007 Houston Press readers poll. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
