Originally a single North Shore sandwich shack, Kua 'Aina proves the old adage, "Good things come in small packages." Although a few years ago it expanded into more spacious digs – taking its old, seasoned grill with it – Kua 'Aina remains constantly crowded both at its North Shore location as well as in the Ward Centre shopping complex. That's because tourists and locals alike can't get enough of the monstrous salads, sandwiches and burgers offered at this wildly popular quick-eats destination. While the classic selection of turkey, roast beef and fish filet sandwiches provides flavorful alternatives, the humongous burgers are the star attractions. Not your average drive-through "whopper," these are thick, smoked patties – available only in "big" and "bigger" varieties – grilled and placed between a fluffy Kaiser roll complete with lettuce and generously sliced tomatoes. Add pineapple or, better yet, a fat slice of avocado for the perfect pre- or post-beach meal accompanied by a basket of the made-to-order shoestring fries. Meatless options include a substantial avocado sandwich on multigrain bread. Rolls of paper towels at each table get much use, to say the least. Beyond Ward Centre, Kua 'Aina has expanded into Los Angeles and Tokyo. Voted "King of Burgers" by a 2006 The Honolulu Advertiser readers poll. Beer available. Cash or check only. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
