The Starbucks of sushi, Genki Sushi Co. continues its rapid international expansion with a handful of well-placed locations throughout Oahu. This Japan-based chain has offered delicious express-style sushi in Hawaii since 1993 and has remained a hit with the local lunch-on-the-go crowd ever since. Always packed but nevertheless efficient, these à la carte restaurants send fresh-made sushi down a conveyor belt with a first-come, first-served policy. If you want it, grab it. Genki makes no frills about presentation. You can rest assured that you're getting fresh, quality seafood in every roll, however. The chefs prepare all the favorites – salmon, tuna, eel, poke and the like – as well as a few surprises, such as sweet shrimp, surf clam and corn. If you don't see what you like, you can request something be made to order. Genki also features several standard, cooked Japanese meals, such as teriyaki and noodle bowls. The best part might be that even after the plates pile up, the bill remains significantly lower than you might expect. Full bar except for Ala Moana Center location, which is BYOB. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Voted Best Sushi in the 2008 Star-Bulletin readers poll.
