Down to Earth is more than just a hot spot for quick and healthy meals: It's a lifestyle. What started as a grass-roots operation in 1977 to promote vegetarianism has grown to become a grocery/deli and the most successful natural foods chain in Hawaii, as well as the largest all-vegetarian natural foods venture in the United States. The handful of locations across Hawaii, including three stores on Oahu, dedicate most space to the incredible selection of organic groceries, produce, cosmetics, vitamins and supplements, and other bulk items friendly to all earth's creatures, including the human body. The deli appears little more than a few scattered stools and tables, but Down to Earth cares little about fancy looks: It's what's inside that counts. (Or what's not inside, as the case may be.) The self-serve hot and cold buffet bars, when paired with the delectable and varied sandwich and wrap list, make up a 90 percent vegan-approved menu of deliciously house-prepared dishes that rotate frequently. Pay by the pound for the scrumptious salads, soups, lasagna, curries, chili, tofus and pastas, all free of preservatives and most animal products. Baked goods such as cookies, cakes and muffins satisfy the ingredient-conscious sweet tooth, as well. Down to Earth also offers cooking and nutrition classes to keep the healthy living going outside of the stores' walls. No alcohol available. Serving during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours daily.
