LaSpada's Original Hoagies isn't afraid to advertise the "best damn hoagies in town," although some might go a step beyond that to claim they're the best in the world. This South Florida institution since 1973, with roots tracing to an Italian ancestor's turn-of-the-century New England shops, draws out-the-door lunch lines to the three Fort Lauderdale-area counter-style restaurants. LaSpada's has earned quite a reputation for its top-quality subs: The hot and sweet pepper combination, along with generous helpings of tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, and oregano that season each sandwich create the trademark taste, all served atop freshly baked bread and meats sliced to order. With the "small" size measuring a jam-packed eight inches, most diners choose to split the large, 12-inch sub. Recommended sandwiches include the Italian Special (with boiled ham, Genoa salami, Italian cappicola and provolone) and the Monster, with ham, cheese, roast beef and turkey. LaSpada's is the kind of place that retains a loyal waitstaff, so expect to be treated like family, and for those long lines to move quickly. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
