Vicente Vazquez wanted to connect the people of Detroit to the food and culture of Cuba. Using several of his family's recipes, he opened Vicentes Cuban Cuisine in 2005. As a result, a night at Vicentes is the next best thing to a night in Havana: fun, festive and very social. Tuesday night is domino night, free salsa lessons are available every Saturday night, and Brazilian and Cuban music is played throughout the week, including live bands and DJs. I Love Lucy reruns play on a loop on a flat-screen TV above the full bar. The bright, 1930s-art deco furnishings set the tone for an exciting and memorable dining experience. For starters, the papas rellenas (fried potatoes stuffed with spicy meat) and the tortilla Espanola, the traditional Spanish egg and onion omelette, are popular. Beef, pork, seafood and chicken entrées are all served with unique salads that complement each dish. The ropa vieja, translated as "old clothes," is a traditional Cuban dish containing shredded beef, bell peppers and green olives, seasoned with red wine and tomato sauce. Plantains and black beans are served on the side. For dessert, try the flan de coco y ron (coconut rum flan). Voted Best Authentic International Cuisine in 2007 Hour Detroit magazine readers poll and Best Cuban Restaurant in 2008 Metro Times critics' poll. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Late-night weekends.
