Since opening in 1997, Avalon International Breads has served loaf after loaf of quality bread to inner-city residents and suburban Detroitians alike. Owners Jackie Victor and Ann Perrault have something bigger than bread in mind, however. Part of the urban renaissance in the Cass Corridor area, Avalon is a socially responsible, community oriented, sustainable, small business. Employees are paid a living wage, and 50 percent of the staff lives in the surrounding neighborhood. Avalon even takes its leftover bread to shelters every night. Most of the breads are made with organic ingredients – all are made with 100 percent organic flour – and the business is working on becoming waste-free through recycling and composting. Serving a diverse community and a wide range of patrons, Perrault and Victor simply love what they do: making good food and serving the community. Some delicious breads include the fishtail brioche and the raisin pecan bread. Avalon also serves focaccia pizzas, sandwiches, treats such as a nutty chocolate bar brownie, and a great cup of coffee. No alcohol available. Serving breakfast and lunch 6 am–6 pm Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon. Voted Best Bakery in the 2009 Metro Times readers' poll.
