Located in the Hamtramck borough, where more than a quarter of the residents are Polish, Under the Eagle successfully competes against a host of other Eastern European restaurants. Under the Eagle's décor is reminiscent of the Polish countryside, with a red stained-glass portrait of an eagle, red-and-white checkered tablecloths, and a waitstaff dressed in embroidered vests and white skirts. The staff is extremely helpful to diners who are new to Polish cuisine as well as to the regulars. Traditional Polish dishes are served on a rotating menu that changes daily. Normally, three soups are available and may include beet soup, duck-blood or dill pickle soup. Other favorites include sauerkraut, kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, applesauce blintzes and pierogi – all of these are served in a combination platter for the diner who likes to sample. Meats such as the stuffed pork chops will satisfy nearly any appetite. A selection of Eastern European beers is available. Cash only. Serving lunch and dinner Thu–Tue. Closed Wed.
