Mayor John Hickenlooper was one of the founders of this first Denver brewpub in 1988. It remains one of the city's most charismatic in this growing genre, with multiple levels devoted to dining, pool, entertainment and, of course, beer. Brew varieties range from the cask-conditioned Splatz Porter to the rich Eli's Cream Ale with a couple of zingers thrown in to keep things interesting, such as Patty's Chile. The pub fare is upscale and internationally influenced, from American Traditional to Irish and British pub grub. Starters may include the Mediterranean platter of hummus and tomato relish, andouille sausage-stuffed shrimp and sesame-studded calamari, while entrées run the gamut from buttermilk fried chicken to gumbo and veggie lasagna. Pub specialties include bangers and mashers, shepherd's pie, and fish and chips. Saturday brunch features various omelets, steak and eggs, breakfast burritos, tasso eggs Benedict, and berry pancakes. There's a comedy show in the basement of this restored historic building (for a separate admission charge) and billiards on the top floor, along with private rooms scattered about – ideal for business meetings or parties. And a delicious root beer that's always a hit with the kids makes this a top stop for just about everyone. Reservations suggested. Full bar until 2 am nightly. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Late-night Fri–Sat. Sat brunch 11 am-3 pm. Voted Best Brewpub in Westword's 2009 readers' poll.
