Opened in 1986, Gunther Toody's Diner is a Denver area-based chain drawn from the 1960s sitcom Car 54, Where are You? Each eatery boasts a vehicle in the dining room, colorful vinyl booths, tableside jukeboxes, plenty of 50s and 60s kitsch, and a staff acting like extras from the TV show Happy Days, sporting goofy nametags such as "Bubbles" and "Fonzie." The menu is filled with the nostalgic comfort food for which diners are most famous: burgers, fries and shakes. Blue-plate specials and platters of chicken-fried steak, meat loaf and beer-battered cod go down easy, as does the price. Breakfast – omelets, scrambles, hotcakes and the like, served until 11 am daily – is just about the cheapest you'll find anywhere. (Get there early for the super-specials.) Kids love this place, and the staff really goes all-out to make them feel welcome. Birthday parties are a regular occurrence – the whole place sings, and the person celebrating is obligated to get up and dance. Beer available. Kids menu. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
