Locals with a severe sweet tooth could say that the 1989 meeting of then-hotel management student Anand Saha and Austrian pastry chef-trainee/future-wife Doris Tinter was rather serendipitous. With a shared dream of owning their own business, the pair moved to Columbus in 1995 to merge their talents in the kitchen and their love for classical music in a small café they called Mozart's. In those early days, a lone violinist would serenade a small cluster of tables in the rustic Clintonville location. Now with three successful ventures and complete live ensembles performing several nights a week, the couple's vision has truly crescendoed. Mozart's offers a range of Eastern European-inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner options – think veal, schnitzels, quiches and Hungarian goulash. But where the Sahas really strike a note is the more than 80 types of pastries and desserts. Imagine: cannolis, scones and petit fours; rum balls, éclairs and cream horns; fruit tartlets and croissants stuffed with every sinful filling in the book. Mouth watering yet? We haven't even mentioned the vast selection of tortes in flavors such as mocha, chocolate cream, carrot, hazelnut, Key lime, raspberry, strawberry, vanilla, buttercream ... you get the idea. All are made daily by Doris and her team of European and American pastry chefs. And on Jan. 27 each year, you're really in luck, because the only thing better than a Mozart's pastry is a free Mozart's pastry. That's because the three cafés celebrate the birthday of their namesake composer with an open house of free-for-all treats. Beer and wine available. Serving breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Mon–Sat. Closes 5:30 pm Sun. Hours vary by location.
