Even on the coldest day, the warm, intimate settings at chef/owner Sergio Abramof's sister restaurants, Sergio's in University Circle and Sergio's Saravá at Shaker Square, send a fiery Brazilian flare through your veins. Tucked into a tiny carriage house among Cleveland's best museums, 50-seat wonder Sergio's in University Circle brings the flavors of Central and South America to life. Ditto the more expansive, dinner-only Sergio's Saravá in Shaker Square. Abramof and crew create simple and vibrant dishes that radiate bold flavors. At both eateries, the diverse menus showcase a variety of grilled and roasted meats, especially pork and chicken, with several seafood choices to boot. A house favorite is the Shrimp Baiana, pan-seared shrimp with a mix of malaguetta pepper, garlic, scallion and coconut milk. The traditional favorites of Chef Sergio's homeland are definitely not forgotten, including feijoada, a Brazilian national dish consisting of a stew of black beans, white rice, farofa (cassava flour), roast pork, sausage and bacon. The ingredients of the dish are traditionally served separately, but this kitchen mixes them all together, stirring in a tart lime-pepper sauce and fried spinach. Saravá also features a raw bar and a small plates menu that includes mini lobster rolls, stewed calamari and thin-crust pizzas. Try the caramel custard for dessert. Along with a wide variety of domestic and Brazilian beers and wines, the restaurants' full bars serve up tasty mojitos and particularly potent caipirinhas, a Brazilian favorite made with sugar-cane brandy. And somehow, the elegance found here encourages a kid-friendly atmosphere. Sergio's son, Julian, helped create the kids menu. Reservations suggested. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner Mon–Sat. Closed Sun and between meals. Named Best Appetizers in the 2008 Cleveland magazine Silver Spoon Awards.
