Brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway formed the Great Lakes Brewing Company in 1988, staking claim as the first microbrewery in Ohio. Great Lakes boasts six signature brews on tap, available at its historic brewpub boasting an extensive, well-chosen menu. The headliner is the Dortmunder Gold Lager, followed by Burning River Pale Ale, Commodore Perry IPA, Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, Eliot Ness Amber Lager and Holy Moses White Ale. At the appropriate times, you can also get seasonals such as Conway's Irish Ale, Moondog Ale and Christmas Ale. The brewpub's renovated building was once a stopover for The Untouchables, the famed group of prohibition agents headed by Eliot Ness who were credited with taking down Al Capone's gang. The main fixture of the taproom is the gorgeous bar upon which the beer is served. Bullet holes adorn the panels, reputedly from Ness himself. If you would like to make your visit an interactive experience, head on down to the Beer Cellar, equipped with stone walls and a wooden bar complete with viewing areas of the smaller brewing tanks. Or drop by the indoor/outdoor Beer Garden for enjoyment of your brews. The "campus" is completed with banquet facilities and even a gift shop. As for the food, the menu is built on all-natural, organic, free-roaming/free-range and locally or regionally raised and produced items. Starters include barley pretzels, artichoke crock (artichoke hearts with Parmesan, fried pita chips and hot pepper rings), a sausage sampler, salmon cakes, fried fish bites and seared scallops. Cheese soup and various salads, burgers and Irish stew lead to an entrée menu that includes grilled flat iron steak, lemon caper halibut and apple porter pork chops. Full bar. Kids menu. Brewery office hours 8 am–4 pm Mon–Fri. Brewpub serving lunch and dinner Mon–Sat. Bar open until midnight and 1 am on weekends. Closed Sun.
