The tiny, rectangular dining room at Ambar India restaurant fills up quickly with Gaslight District amblers, regulars and native Indian patrons alike, creating a lively and sometimes fairly loud dining experience. Share a dish with family or friends atop white tablecloths illuminated by chandeliers. For appetizers, try the vegetable pakora (vegetables fried in a chickpea batter) or samosas, which are deep-fried pastries stuffed with potatoes and peas. Warm and delicious Indian flat bread, called nan, is available in onion, garlic and chicken flavors. Lamb and shrimp curry are winners on the dinner menu, along with aloo vindaloo (potatoes cooked in a spicy sauce) and saag choley (garbanzo beans and spinach cooked in a tomato and cream sauce). Every entrée can be prepared to your desired level of heat. Side dishes include hot pickles and sweet mango chutney, a sweet, thick salsa that's delicious on the veggie samosas. And for dessert, try ras malai or kulfi, which are cold, bread-like sweets. Beer available. Serving lunch Sun–Fri, dinner nightly. Closed between meals.
