"Petersen's has the scoop on ice cream in Oak Park. The historic eatery opened in 1919 and is still serving custom-made ice cream ... in an authentically quaint corner spot. Try one of more than 30 ice cream flavors, including peach in the summer and pumpkin around Thanksgiving."

"The important number here is 18: That's the percentage of butterfat the ice cream contains. The 30 or so flavors range from old-fogy faves like rum eggnog and black walnut to kiddie fare like blue moon and Oreo. Their ice cream counter has a full-service soda fountain."

Owner Daryl Bartelson on the ice cream sundae: "'Here the hot fudge turtle sundae is the number one item sold.' Customers get their choice of ice cream mixed with caramel, hot fudge, butter roasted pecans, whipped cream and a cherry, plus a twist. 'Everything that's on the top of the sundae we put on the bottom of the sundae,' explains Bartelson. It's true for every sundae from the strawberry to the caramel. 'No one is disappointed, because when you finish the toppings you have the bottom, and that's important.'"
