Best German
Top 100 Restaurant, Chicago
"This cute, lodge-like restaurant is like a slice of Deutschland transported to Irving Park. German melodies waft through the air, mingling with the smell of beer and wiener schnitzel. Beer steins and Hummel figurines are prominently displayed in the bar and adjoining dining room. Owners Anita Heil and her husband, Werner (the chef), were born in Germany and opened Mirabell in 1977. Werner trained as a chef in Germany and now supervises three other cooks."
– Chicago Tribune
"Chef Werner's old-school German and central European dishes might be the best-kept culinary secret on the Northwest Side. They may be best known for their bar–featuring a staggering array of heady German beers–but the restaurant shouldn't be overlooked. A carnivore's delight, the menu features tremendous sauerbraten, an outstanding sausage sampler and some of the best goulash in the English-speaking world."
– Time Out Chicago magazine
"Best damn Wiener schnitzel in town. This, the original and the classic, was lightly breaded, pan-fried and terrific."
– Pat Bruno, Chicago Sun-Times
