Whether you're a native, a transplant or just visiting, you haven't done Charlotte right until you've had a hot dog from Green's Lunch. A Queen City institution since 1926, this inconspicuous Uptown building offers what Green's claims is the "world's best hot dog" for practically pocket change. Although the menu also offers burgers, grits and pancakes, no need to stray from what they do best. That would be a classic, Carolina-style dog "all the way" (with mustard, ketchup, onions, chili and slaw). The sheer act of downing a couple with a glass of sweet tea and some greasy fries is almost enough to make anyone an official Charlottean. Look for Green's pushcart in First Union Plaza on pleasant days. No alcohol available. Cash or check only. Serving breakfast and lunch Mon–Sat. Late-lunch Mon–Fri. Closed Sun. Hours may vary by location. Voted Best Hot Dog in the 2008 Creative Loafing critics' poll.
