Those who think good barbecue doesn't exist north of the Mason-Dixon have probably never been north of the Mason-Dixon. The Boston area has a handful of excellent barbecue joints, the most unlikely of which is a small chain found in a handful of suburban strip malls. Tennessee's barbecue might not be well known in Boston proper, but for suburban dwellers, the Framingham, Milford, Peabody and Braintree locations are a barbecue-lover's dream. The luxury of being a barbecue joint in the North is that you're not tied to any one style. Tennessee's is known for its Memphis-style pork ribs, but they also turn out a great Carolina pulled pork sandwich, brisket and barbecued chicken. The restaurants use Southern Pride smokers, and they do the low-and-slow method over a mix of fruit woods, including hickory, apple and cherry. Ribs come in third, half or full slabs. And sampler plates, like the Oink, Cackle and Moo, let guests try a bit of everything. Their chicken wings, which come in orders of eight to 100, are smoky and succulent. Sides include dirty rice, collard greens, cornbread and candied yams. Save room, or make room, for the pecan pie as dessert. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner daily.
