Birmingham institution Savage's Bakery and Deli has been creating sweet works of art in the Homewood area since 1939. Gorgeous special-occasion cakes are the specialty, prompting Alabama residents to drive across the state for upcoming birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. In addition to classics such as German chocolate and devil's food, customers can top their custom, moist yellow or white cakes with a choice of icing (including butter cream, burnt sugar caramel, chocolate fudge, lemon orange or mocha) and fill it with such special flavors as vanilla custard, raspberry, lemon or strawberry. The bakery is also a breakfast hot spot for those seeking a morning sugar-boost of old-fashioned cinnamon rolls or rich butter flake rolls. For lunch, locals love the deli's zesty deviled eggs and from-scratch sandwiches, from the smoked turkey to the locally famed pimento cheese. Boxed lunch sets with chips and sinfully delicious house-made brownies are also available. Voted Best Desserts in 2007 The Birmingham News readers poll.
