Dr. Henry Bright, an orthodontist in search of the perfect cup of coffee, founded the first O'Henry's Coffees in the Homewood area in 1993. Bright traveled the Pacific Northwest, Boston, New York and other major cities where he learned to roast his own beans. This highly successful coffee shop chain (along with its sister Red Mountain Coffee Roasters) is now owned by Randy and Mary Adamy, and O'Henry's still offers one of the best coffee selections in Birmingham, with specialty beans coming from as far away as Hawaii, Jamaica and Ethiopia. House specialties include the African Classic blend and the popular Kilimanjaro Sunrise, roasted only once a year. Locals frequently request the Jazzy Java with cinnamon, rum and pecan flavors or the strong and rich Mocha Java. There's also the Guatemalan Guayab, a spicy and aromatic organic Fair Trade coffee, or the intense Sumatra Gold Roast guaranteed to start your morning engines. Even the decaf offers a robust taste, and the espresso is touted by many as the best in town. Some O'Henry's feature a nice selection of sweet treats, sandwiches and soups as well as free wireless access. Voted Best Coffeehouse in 2007 The Birmingham News readers poll. No alcohol available.
