The two Phoenicia Bakery & Deli locations in North and South Austin boast loyal lunch followings for the restaurants' fabulous Middle Eastern and deli-style sandwiches along with traditional and vegetarian-friendly sides and dips such as hummus, eggplant, tabouli salad and stuffed grape leaves. In the morning, locals seek out the bakery for a fast breakfast of Greek, Persian, Lebanese and various European-style breads and pastries, such as the cheese bread with a blend of feta, vegetable oil and sesame seeds atop fresh pita. Lunch specialties include a top-flight gyro: piles of roasted lamb and beef with fresh vegetables and a zesty cucumber yogurt dressing on freshly baked pita. Or sample the meat bread with ground beef, onions, tomatoes and spices with fresh pita. There is an enormous selection of Mediterranean-style desserts: moist apricot strudel, baklava, Persian pastries and candy, Turkish cookies stuffed with walnuts, and chewy log pastries loaded with pistachios. If you prefer to cook your own Middle Eastern cuisine, the grocery offers an excellent selection of ingredients, including at least a dozen olive oils, 20 gourmet olives, several imported cheeses and numerous freshly baked breads.
