After its creation in 1980 on Kerbey Lane, this colorful American-eclectic restaurant expanded into four locations, each famous for its farm-grown pesticide-free fruits and veggies and bountiful breakfast selections that can be ordered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The menu offers considerable choices for vegetarians, including various quesadillas and enchiladas, hummus and tabouli, a daily vegetarian soup, full-meal salads, entrées such as stuffed poblano pepper and various pasta dishes, and seasonal offerings such as Mediterranean spinach strata. Then there are the vegetarian-friendly breakfast offerings. Pancakes for dinner anyone? Big as a dinner plate, the blueberry pancakes are light, fluffy and cooked to perfection – not an easy feat given their enormous size. The filling stacks of gingerbread pancakes are a favorite with locals seeking late-night munchies after area bars have closed for the night. And the omelets are as light as the pancakes. Try the eggs Benedict-inspired version with spinach, Hollandaise sauce and diced Canadian bacon. Yes, we said bacon. While there are plenty of veggies on hand at Kerbey Lane Cafe, meat lovers will find an ample selection of fish, steak and chicken on the menu. And don't forget dessert supplied by the restaurant's adjoining bakery, from apple pie with cinnamon oatmeal topping to a surprisingly moist carrot cake or a tofu chocolate treat.
