Like its Round Rock predecessor and sister restaurant, Gumbo's Louisiana Style Cafe on the first floor of Austin's old Brown building offers a historic backdrop with a touch of Louisiana. With white tablecloths and a waitstaff dressed in black, each location features some of the best Cajun and Creole cuisine this far west of the bayou, including jambalaya, étouffée, po-boys, gumbo, and red beans and rice. Some of these regional dishes pack a lot of heat, so be sure to ask the knowledgeable waitstaff regarding levels of spice. Start your journey to the Gulf with Gumbo's special oysters Rockefeller: a half-dozen oysters on the half shell, baked with spinach and topped with another fried oyster for double the flavor. The chicken and sausage gumbo rivals its cousin in New Orleans, with its stout roux base for the meat. A house specialty is the rainbow trout filled with shrimp and crawfish (when in season) and served with rosemary mashed potatoes and a spinach-stuffed baked tomato. Another popular main attraction is the pork tenderloin: thick slices of pork with mashed sweet potatoes and crunchy sweet potato strings. The fabulous bread pudding is a local favorite, made with fine breadcrumbs instead of large chunks of bread, and the smooth chocolate custard offers a sweet, creamy finish to a spicy meal and resembles a large helping of flan. The full bar serves New Orleans-style hurricanes and boasts an extensive wine list. No kid's menu, but there are kid-friendly entrées such as chicken fingers or spaghetti. Business attire suggested. Reservations suggested. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner Mon–Sat. Closed between meals. Closed Sun. Voted Best Cajun-Creole in the 2009 The Austin Chronicle readers' poll.
