This historic hamburger joint and diner started as a drive-through on South Congress in 1939 and was moved to its present location – itself a historic drive-through site – 30 years later by Homer "Hut" Hutson. Under its present ownership since 1981, Hut's bounteous burgers combine with lively décor, music and people watching. Every burger is worth sampling, but the All-American Buddy Holly is an Austin institution: tomato, lettuce, onions, pickles and cheddar atop a juicy portion of ground beef, served with crispy fries or enormous onion rings. Kids love the ample selection of burgers, fries and milk shakes while grownups rave about the chicken burgers and buffalo burgers that are just as generously sized as the hamburgers. (They also like to dip their onion rings into the chipotle mayo.) Daily blue plate specials include Southern fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, ham steak, meat loaf and fried catfish with plenty of side fixings such as mashed potatoes or fries, veggies of the day and Texas toast. Lighter fare includes a grilled chicken salad, tuna salad or a veggie plate with wheat toast. Of course, no self-respecting burger joint would be without its root beer floats. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Voted Best Hamburger in The Austin Chronicle's 2008 readers poll.
