Locally owned and operated steak house favorite Austin Land & Cattle Company succeeds with its expertly prepared chargrilled steaks as well as its fine renditions of seafood, appetizers and sides. Fortunately, while still pricey, the menu is several dollars per entrée below national chain competitors. Recommended starters include the drunken shrimp cocktail, New Mexican green chiles stuffed with goat cheese, and air-dried beef prosciutto. Stellar soups include spicy sirloin and sweet potato clam chowder. The menu outlines the options for how your beefsteak can be prepared: from Black & Blue (charred outside, cold center) to – perish the thought – Well (no pink/broiled throughout). House-made special sauces to top your steak include Gorgonzola butter, roasted garlic and Maker's Mark bourbon sauce. Other winning entrées include grilled pork chops with Tabasco, garlic and spice wood honey; chicken-fried top sirloin; and grilled Pacific line-caught wild king salmon with fresh tomato-basil vinaigrette. Vegetarians will enjoy the giant portobello mushroom steak. Full bar. Serving dinner nightly. Voted Best Steak in the 2009 Austin Chronicle readers' poll.
