Named after the founders’ mothers, Agnes & Muriel's appropriately features inventively nouveau "Mom food" served in a retro-kitsch environment straight out of Pee-wee's Playhouse. The converted two-story brick house features large windows, outer space memorabilia, Barbie and Ken dolls, a makeshift teacup chandelier with Christmas lights, and 1950s- and '60s-vintage china. Starters may include macaroni and cheese fritters, baby back ribs with a Coca-Cola barbecue sauce or fried green tomatoes. In addition to plenty of soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers, daily specials are offered, such as shrimp and corn chowder, seafood egg rolls, and sesame-fried lobster tails. Pair recommended entrées such as salmon croquettes, pork chops with cinnamon apple fritters or boneless fried chicken with worthy sides (green bean or squash casseroles, lemon sesame collards and noodle kugel), and your comfort food feast will be nearly complete. Don’t forget the red velvet cake or butterscotch caramel cream pie for dessert. Weekend brunch offers unique twists such as chicken biscuit Benedict or strawberries- and cream-stuffed pancakes.
